Given that the majority of the island was covered in forests before European colonialism, it's no wonder that there is an abundance of natural beauty and wildlife to discover.
The island is home to a range of flora and fauna that are indigenous to Mauritius alone. One of the best exemplars of this flora is the Ebony tree, which has become an emblem of Mauritius. You can spot these trees throughout the island, but the Ebony Forest Reserve in the south of the island is a must-visit.
Another natural reserve to add to your Mauritius itinerary is the Black River Gorges National Park. The reserve is centered around the Black River Peak and features a range of hiking trails that will take visitors through different types of Mauritius soil, streams, and vegetation. Additionally, the park has around 300 species of flowering plants and nine species of birds endemic to Mauritius, such as the Pink Pigeon and Mauritius Kestrel.
The Vallée de Ferney is a private nature reserve located in the southeast of the island, which offers tours for visitors to explore its beautiful trails, forests and is home to majestic wildlife such as deer and monkeys.
Visitors can also catch a glimpse of some of the world's most iconic land-based and marine animals such as giant tortoises, dolphins and whales.
